Between Asia and the Americas lies a region of islands in the tropical Pacific Ocean. Sections of this area have been called by various names, including Micronesia, Melanesia, and Polynesia. As a whole, we at Adventure Collection describe it as Oceania.
That’s because the ocean is a big part of life in this corner of the world. Here, cities, rain forests, and rivers all seem to have one thing in common: a connection with the sea.
Fiji’s Navua River — often referred to as “a river of Eden” — is no exception. Born of natural springs and rainfall in the rugged interior of Viti Levu, Fiji’s big island, the Navua follows a meandering path from its headwaters through rolling rain forest highlands. Then it descends, slicing a deep and narrow chasm through layers of limestone and volcanic sediment before it enters the sea. With Adventure Collection, you’ll be able to raft through this black-lava-rock and miniature Grand Canyon-like landscape, which — over the eons — has been laced by luscious cascades of giant ferns, vines, and fragrant jungle foliage.
Trips to the South Pacific often involve other little known spots, such as Papua New Guinea. Here, nature and culture intersect at a vibrant point: Vast tropical rain forests and jungle-cloaked mountains bump up against eight hundred different languages from just as many indigenous tribes. And there are few — if any — human spectacles that can match the gathering of these bands at highland “sing-sings.”Thousands of participants compete in singing, dancing, drumming, and decorating their bodies in imaginative ways.
On the better known, large islands of Australia and New Zealand, cities meet the sea. After an adventure to the Great Barrier Reef for snorkeling, diving, or just basking in the sun as you float above the largest formation ever created by living beings, spend a couple of luxurious nights in the very metropolitan Sydney, Australia. In New Zealand, experience some of the world’s best dolphin, seal, and whale watching on a boat cruise off the town of Kaikoura on the South Island’s east coast.
Whether you take a trip to Micronesia, Melanesia, or Polynesia, consider the sea your travel companion in this place we call Oceania.
