20 Apr Blog Your Way Around the World: Alaska Winter Magic – Part Two
In 2010, seven of Adventure Collection’s ten members sponsored Blog Your Way Around the World, a unique online travel contest that challenged contestants to write a short essay about why they deserved to win eight of the world’s most amazing adventure vacations and how, if selected the winner, they would write about their experiences to inspire others. Beth Robbins won the contest by receiving the most votes from readers. Beth recently enjoyed, and blogged about, one of her prizes, a trip to Alaska in winter, courtesy of Adventure Collection member Off the Beaten Path. We are pleased to share her dispatches here.

The flight to Anchorage from Fairbanks was absolutely amazing. All we could see from both sides of the airplane were the snow covered peaks of the Alaska Range, stretching for miles. We got an extra treat when Denali, North America’s highest mountain at 20,320 feet above sea level, came into view.
When we arrived in Anchorage it was warm and sunny. A little over an hour later, we reached our destination, the small town called Girdwood, where we checked into the beautiful Hotel Alyeska, located at the base of a ski mountain. Our room was magnificent, overlooking the tram and with a view to the top of the mountain.
The next morning we boarded a helicopter for the most amazing scenic flight ever. We flew over Cook Inlet, and saw miles of snow covered mountains, glaciers, and moose lying in the snow. On the way back we saw people heli- skiing and several campers and their colorful tents, braving the cold.
As we were returning to the hotel, we noticed a sign that said the mountain had received 695 inches of snow so far this year. That was the determining factor, along with a beautiful sunny day, that made us decide to go skiing.
We skipped lunch, rented skies and walked out the back entrance of our hotel. A hundred yards further we boarded the tram to the top and spent the most magnificent afternoon downhill skiing. I was one happy camper!
