19 Feb What Do Kids Really Want to Do on Vacation?
Ah, kids. We birth them, feed them, clothe them, and sometimes even manage to bathe them, but do we really understand them? Not to hear my children tell it.
When Condé Nast Traveler’s Director of Consumer News and Digital Community, Wendy Perrin, interviewed her colleagues’ kids about their favorite travel memories, they were quick to recall experiences in Morocco, Bora Bora, and Egypt.

It got me wondering what my kids would say. And my friends’ kids. They’re probably not quite as well-traveled as the offspring of CNT staffers, but they get around more than most children. I decided to do a little polling of my own.
What is your best family vacation memory? Why?
Avery (13): “Snorkeling with penguins, sharks, and baby sea lions in the Galapagos.”
Max (11): “Zip lining in Thailand because it was scary, but fun at the same time.”
Jack (10): “Driving a speedboat on Lake Como in Italy last summer.”
Georgina (7): “Going to England and building a snowman with my dad and brother two years ago.”
Stephanie (12): Going to Tikal and seeing all the Mayan pyramids and exploring the ruins.”
Matthew (10): “My favoritest memory is the pool on our Belize trip since it was pretty awesome. The whole trip was really fun.”
What is your worst family vacation memory? Why?
Avery (13): “My mom made me wear ugly zip-off khakis in fashionable Hong Kong, because we were on our way to Thailand where clothes have to be modest. It was pretty much the lowlight of the whole trip. I wanted to burn and forget the pants, but my mom used a picture of me wearing them for our Christmas card.”
Max (11): “One time at a hotel kids’ club, a girl threw a rock and it hit me in the head.”
Jack (10): “When my mom made us walk three miles through several fields in Cambridgeshire, England, and I got serious hay fever.”
Georgina (7): “Throwing up in Disneyland all night from eating too much macaroni and cheese.”
Stephanie (12): “The Monkey River Tour in Belize because I was hot, sunburned, and covered with sunscreen and bug spray. Also, I was sweating and there was monkey poop falling from the sky.”
Matthew (10): “Mexico because Stephanie and I almost drowned in the swimming pool.”
Finish this sentence. “When I travel with my parents, I wish they would…”
Avery (13): “…plan trips with families with kids my age.”
Max (11): “…let us relax instead of sightseeing all day.”
Jack (10): “…give us a bag of new toys for the plane ride like they used to when we were little.”
Georgina (7): “…give us popcorn.”
Stephanie (12): “…give us candy on the plane.”
Matthew (10): “…explore with me instead of taking so many pictures.”
Finish this sentence. “When I travel with my parents, I wish they wouldn’t…”
Avery (13): “…boss me around and make me wear sun shirts.”
Max (11): “…make me play with kids I don’t know.”
Jack (10): “…fuss at me.”
Georgina (7): “…take so many pictures, because it’s annoying.”
Stephanie (12): “….touch me when I’m sunburned on my back.”
Matthew (10): “…tell me to pose for pictures and look around at stuff that I don’t want to see.”
Where would you like to go next and why?
Avery (13): “I want to go to Paris and see the catacombs and the Eiffel Tower. I’ve been there, but I was too little to remember.”
Max (11): “I would like to go to Africa and see my favorite animal: the pygmy hippo.”
Jack (10): “Minecon, the Minecraft conference. Because it’s fun and I’d get a cape.”
Georgina (7): “I would like to go back to Lake Como, Italy. Our hotel there had a really cool elevator.”
Stephanie (12): “I would like to Egypt and see the pyramids and go to the Egypt museum.”
Matthew (10): Japan since I’ve heard about it and it’s really cool. Oh yeah, I’d like to go to Denmark to visit the Lego museum. Or Japan—it doesn’t really matter to me.”
