At first, Alberta might seem a little out of place on an adventure travel site. First of all, it’s landlocked; and secondly, it’s the most populous of Canada’s three prairie provinces (which also include Manitoba and Saskatchewan — the only other landlocked Canadian province). But a place devoid of water activities or crowded by the press of humanity is definitely not the Adventure Collection version of Alberta that you’ll come to know.
In fact, it might be best to forget the word landlocked altogether, for on your Alberta & Canadian Rockies adventure tour, you can raft on a glacier-fed river or bike among crystalline lakes. You might even paddle the spectacular alpine Lake Louise — known for its sparkling blue waters — situated at the base of powdery peaks that have long been at the heart of Canadian mountaineering. And in a spot called Waterton Lakes National Park, you can explore the “Crown of the Continent,” where rugged, windswept mountains rise abruptly out of gentle prairie grasslands and a chain of lakes provides for a rich variety of plants and wildlife. Your adventures and activities in Alberta will certainly challenge your notion of what a landlocked country truly is.
As for that populous description, it’s surprising that in Alberta, nature is never far away. Five of Canada’s thirteen World Heritage Sites are found in this province: Dinosaur Provincial Park, Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, Wood Buffalo National Park (Canada’s largest national park and the second largest in the world), and Banff-Jasper National Parks.
In Banff National Park, you can pedal from the picturesque resort town of Banff to Lake Minnewanka, surrounded by spectacular views of Mount Rundle, Cascade Mountain, Bow Falls, and dramatically eroded sandstone hoodoos. Picnic amid snowcapped spires, and then round out your Banff adventure with a climb to one of the park’s most stunning alpine pastures, alive with wildflowers and the whistles of wildlife.
Landlocked and populous? You could say that. But Adventure Collection will take you to an Alberta that is a liquid land, infused by the waters from ancient glaciers, and about as remote and far away from the rank and file as you can get.
