South Africa is a place for tallying.
Let’s start with its cornucopia of diverse cultures. There are eleven official languages. Now add in the scenery, which ranges from starkest desert to lush tropical forests, and from the wild game lands of Kruger National Park to the urbanity of Cape Town. Then, top that off with an almost uncountable number of wildlife species — as rich as anywhere in Africa.
And just as numerous are the modes of visiting South Africa: on foot, by rail, from the seat of a bicycle, from atop a horse, or from an open-topped 4×4.
From along Table Mountain’s base in Cape Town, you can hike to the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, world-renowned for its spectacular collections of proteas and home to more than twenty-two thousand indigenous plants. Or bike from Cape Point in Table Mountain National Park to Chapman’s Peak; and along the way, you’re likely to spot a plentitude of baboons, elands, ostriches, and rare Cape Mountain zebras. Take a rail safari through the stunning Drakensburg Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage site; or pick a classic South Africa safari package and see scores of big game by 4×4. Choose a tour of South Africa that features horseback riding, and you can explore the Limpopo Province in the north, filled with landscape contrasts — true bushveld country, mountain peaks, primeval indigenous forests, pristine-like wildernesses, and patchworks of farmland.
The northern section of Kruger National Park is located in Limpopo. It boasts what is probably the African continent’s most eclectic congregation of wildlife. All of the “Big Five” (buffaloes, elephants, leopards, lions, and rhinos) are abundant, along with a dizzying variety of colorful birds. And going on a Kruger safari is surely one of the world’s best opportunities to see leopards in the wild.
The long list of South African attractions isn’t limited to its cultures, scenery, and wildlife, however. There is a breadth of storied history, culinary traditions, shopping venues, and outdoor activities. Go to South Africa, and you can tour a dramatic Boer War battlefield, taste some of the best wine in the world (with origins dating back to 1659), or shop for extraordinary Zulu art and ceramics. Go snorkeling or diving off the sandy beaches of the KwaZulu-Natal coast.
If all this tallying is exhausting, take heart. There’s at least one reckoning that will be easy. Take a trip to South Africa, and you’ll count yourself lucky.
