Mirages are defined as things that are illusory and not real; and after your Nambia adventure tour, you’ll believe that you’ve seen plenty of them.

With a name that itself conjures up ethereal realms, the “Skeleton Coast” lies in the zone where Namibia meets the Atlantic Ocean. Here, a sand dune metamorphoses into a plain that rolls into a canyon that climbs into a mountain, until you don’t know which is the real topography. It is only by flying over it that you can see a true coast and beaches strewn with whale bones — or are they bones of old sailing ships?

If you journey through the immense Namib Desert — the oldest desert in the world — on your Namibia tour, you’ll watch as sand dunes change with the light, as billions of garnet fragments turn them from crimson red to burnt orange to deep mauve. In the heart of this stark beauty is Sossusvlei, a salt-and-clay pan that is surrounded by some of the highest sand dunes on Earth. Only after a heavy rainfall — which is a rare event here — does the Sossusvlei fill with water. Since clay allows very little water to infiltrate, the resultant turquoise lake will remain for a while. So, is it real? The answer is: only sometimes.

If you drive far into the vast interior of Damaraland during your trip to Namibia, be sure to search for black rhinos and rare, desert-adapted elephants. Overseen by the gaunt and looming Brandeberg Mountains, water runs through these open plains and grasslands, massive granite kopjes, and deep gorges. But then, as you look west, you’ll think you were mistaken in what you saw to the east, as the geography dramatically changes to endless, sandy expanses that flow with giraffes, ostriches, and springbok.

Crystallized salt in the famed Etosha Salt Pans glimmers under a dazzling sun, causing more visual distortions. At water holes, zebras, wildebeests, giraffes, impalas, elephants, jackals, and oryx come to drink in a hot, shimmering panorama of a truly wild Africa. Travel Etosha National Park before your tour of Namibia is over, and you may even catch a glimpse of a leopard or cheetah — or did you?

Your Namibia adventure tour will seem like your imagination gone wild. Afterward, you’ll understand how real mirages can be.
